I knew it was time to call it a night when I saw a guy fingerbanging a girl on the dance floor at Pravda. I’m all for PDA on New Year’s and everything. I get it. However, that is a little excessive.

People need their liquor to get through the beginning of the New Year apparently. There is a line out the door at the ABC store and the empty parking lot next to it has been turned into overflow parking. I have also already seen several people pulled over tonight. Stay safe, kids.

Today is both the last day of the year and of the decade. It’s hard to talk about the aughts as good or bad as it was the decade in which I came of age. I started it as a 13 year old just beginning high school and am ending it as a 23 year old who is a year and a half out of college. Pretty much all those firsts that you see in John Hughes teen movies happened to me in this decade. While...

Explaining the appeal of Facebook to my parents is like someone trying to explain the appeal of the Twilight series to me. The person doing the explaining has kind of a hard time doing so and can’t really find the right words to get the point across and gets annoyed by the end of the conversation while the person who is trying to understand remains unable to grasp the mass appeal or why such...

North Carolina is an interesting state in that it is a total culture clash. It’s not the Deep South, so it’s at least a little progressive (and went to Obama last year) and there is definitely some cool, arty stuff going on, but you also hear a lot of racist comments/see a lot of Confederate flags and hunting season is still kind of a big deal in a lot of the state. Just today, on the...

Tonight was nothing redonkulous. All I did was play Apples to Apples with the news team at Green Light before heading to Pravda for the obligatory dance party. The only real thing of note was that, on the way home, the woman the van in front of me stopped in the middle of the road, opened the door, and puked  in the street before driving off and making a left the wrong way down a one way street....

20 Best Movie Mustaches of the Aughts →
I’m a big fan of facial hair. Hell, my friend Jon even started a website dedicated to glorious beards and ‘staches (THE BEARD CLUB). So, needless to say, I find this list awesome (especially because it did not forget that Andy Samberg sports a badass one in Hot Rod)

So, What's Left In The Bill? →
A good piece in The Daily Beast about what parts of the original health care proposal are still in the current version which, with Sen. Nelson’s saying that he will vote for it now that abortion restrictions have been tightened, will probably be passed when it comes up for a vote on Monday morning. This article cuts through all of the misinformation being spread about the bill and lays out a...

Hot Tub Time Machine trailer I’m quite excited for this one. It looks incredibly stupid but also quite funny. The cast is pretty incredibly with John Cusack, Rob Corrdry, Clark Duke, Craig Robinson, and Chevy Chase (who seems to be reclaiming his comic ability that he misplaced in the 90s). The movie is directed by John Cusack’s buddy Steve Pink (who co-wrote High Fidelity and...

Three things: 1) The trailer for Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood (starring Russell Crowe) is up over at apple.com. After seeing it, all I can say is: I liked it better when it was Gladiator. 2) How in the hell did Sandra Bullock get two Golden Globe nominations (for the movie in which a white woman knows what’s best for a shy black boy and for the most original romantic comedy of the year...

Hipster beer PBR does well in recession →
Sales of PBR (the sweet, sweet nectar of the gods) have gone up 30% in the past year (sales of Bud and Corona are down over 7%). The sales have been increasing since 2002 when hipsters in Portland embraced the cheap beer and the good word has been spreading. Interestingly, there is no Pabst brewery. All brewing is done at contract breweries owned by other companies. The PBR brand is also up for...

A (somewhat lackluster) music video for Mike Posner’s “Drug Dealer Girl” The video was shot at Duke University (where Posner is currently enrolled). If you haven’t yet, do yourself a favor and head over to iTunes U. Once there, download both of Posner’s free mixtapes. Listening to them is a very enjoyable experience and just what you need on a Monday.

Several notes about tonight: 1) Lady GaGa is the Madonna of my generation. This can be good or bad, depending on how you view Madonna and pop music in general. 2) Seeing an 18 year old girl in a onesie dance to Top 40 music like Lady GaGa is both hypnotic and vaguely disturbing. 3) And, finally, as always: Everyday I see my dream.

I wonder how people from the 1950s would feel about the world on the cusp of 2010. I’m sure they would be amazed at things like the internet, airplanes, iPods, and cell phones. But wouldn’t they be a little disappointed. Like, this is cool and all, but where’s the flying cars and Mars colonies?
